Working With Young Men in Sexual Health Settings

Young men are 50% of the problem and 50% of the solution in tackling teenage pregnancies and rising rates of sexually transmitted infections.
We need more young men to access services and we need to be able to work with them more effectively.
However it is often not recognised how difficult it is to work with young men in sexual health services and many practitioners want to know:
‘How can we work with young men if they are not coming into the clinic?’
‘Why do young men always come in groups? How can we deal with this and get them to engage with us?’
‘How should we sort out inappropriate behaviour from the boys?’
‘What do young men want from us and how can we offer it?
Bish Training offers a training course for practitioners (receptionists, health advisers, outreach workers and clinical staff) with a blend of activities that explore values and attitudes to and from young men and practical strategies for engaging with them.
By the end of the course participants will:
- Have an understanding of why young men may be reluctant to access sexual health services.
- Learn how the publicity and design of a clinic can increase the numbers of young men attending.
- How the way we communicate with young men can help them to feel included and valued.
- Understand why young men behave differently to what we might be used to.
The course costs £525 per day, or £300 for a half day in-clinic training (eg Wednesday am).
